Surgery for lung cancer is not effective as a "hit bottom" experience for many persons addicted to nicotine. A study conducted by Mark S. Walker Ph.D. of the School of Medicine at Washington University in St. Louis found that nearly half of all patients who underwent lung surgery for early-stage cancer were smoking again within 12 months.
