A likely story

Baton Rouge LA: After backing her car into a government vehicle in the Attorney General's parking lot, Assistant Attorney General Debbie Baer told police that she was driving a fellow Alcoholics Anonymous member who had begun drinking again and left a strong odor of alcohol in her car.

The Louisiana Attorney General's Office says Mrs. Baer has been placed on administrative leave while they investigate the matter.

Baby gets cocaine, drugs in breast milk

BATON ROUGE, La. -- A lawyer has been accused of breast-feeding her month-old son while using cocaine and two prescription drugs, which showed up in the baby's system.

Marcie Swaze Koch, 36, was arrested Thursday after her newborn tested positive for cocaine after he was taken to a hospital with reported fever, seizures and difficulty breathing, an arrest warrant said. A pediatric emergency room nurse contacted the sheriff's deputies with the drug test results.

Koch admitted to snorting cocaine last weekend, Monday and Tuesday, the warrant says. She also told investigators that she takes Oxycontin, an opiate used as a painkiller, three times a day, and Xanax, or benzodiazepine, which is a sedative. Along with cocaine, barbiturates, opiates and benzodiazepine were found in the baby's system, the warrant says. Details from KATC.com.

Drunk judge can stay in office

A judge who drove while drunk, experienced blackouts and consumed a half-gallon of whiskey a day can remain in office if he complies with terms of a six-month suspension, the Louisiana Supreme Court ruled.

The judge's law clerks and court reporter testified before the commission that Judge Allen Krake smelled of alcohol and appeared disheveled and trembling on a daily basis.

Witnesses called Krake's alcoholism the "worst-kept secret in Grant Parish," and on one occasion, a sheriff's deputy followed the judge home instead of arresting him for driving under the influence. Source.
